By keeping the drives down when stored it also keeps seals on hydraulic Rams in oil so they don't dry out and freeze up position. Tip what is so commonly called pre alpha 1976 to 1983 a changeover period for Mercruiser. It is mainly according to the year of boat but because some manufacturers had extra old stock when manufacturing boats years may overlap.

Tip a used gimbals should be disassembled not only to check for cracks or holes but also the steering shaft removed. Pre-alphas can be the hardest to identify because it was a changeover period and lot of different configurations.

And in about 1981 the steering shaft changed from round spline for arm ring to square. If you try and mount a completely assembled unit or even just the plate to an uneven surface when tighten it down cast aluminum stand chance of cracking.

Bravos use 2 different types of the same serial numbers and what is meant by that some have anode mounting screw holes for anodes don't.
